If you remember growing up and hearing from your mum and dad that you should look after your teeth, then you almost certainly failed to pay much attention to it back then. The thing about getting older is that your teeth begin to slowly rot, your gums start to rot and you can wind up with lots of dental issues unless you find a family dentist to begin to look at your mouth and teeth early on. What you want is a 5 step plan to help with getting your teeth and gums heading in the correct direction, and that is the direction of health.
First, you have to start with a regular check up schedule with your dentist. You want to test in with your dentist at the very least annually. It’s better if you can do it biannually. These regular checks will get you into some consistency in having the dentist check on your progress between checkups. This way the dentist can work with trouble spots and target those and make sure you’re working towards taking care of those issues in the course of the year. The dentist will measure the depth of your gums, the state of your plaque and whether any cavities exist or troublesome areas that might require attention.
Second, you want to chase up with what the dentist tells you to concentrate on. If you want to spend a little more time flossing or at a minimum get a water pik that can help you with your flossing, then you need to follow thru with that. If your dentist recommends a specific type of toothbrush and a certain way to comb, then you want to follow up with that too. If your dentist asks that you concentrate on a certain set of teeth and utilize a particular kind of toothpaste and suggests you brush a certain way, then by every means do the best you can to follow thru with those directions.
3rd, you want a way to keep your folks to follow through with their dental programs too. Make it a challenge for the whole family and see who comes out with the best dental exams. Make it a rewards programme if you need to. Try to create motivations for the family in some form to keep abreast of their dental examinations and dental routines at home.
4th, you want to target the foods, snacks and drinks that can affect your teeth and try to keep away or at the very least curb the intake of these. If your teeth are habitually being stained by coffee, then you may need to cut back on the coffee. If your gums are receding, you want to think about a low carb diet and maintaining a good diet that includes more protein and less sugars.
Ultimately, you want to be sure you have got the equipment you need to keep a good set of teeth and gums. If your dentist advises a water pik, then get a water pik. If your dentist suggests specific types of toothbrushes or toothpaste, the make sure you have those available in the house for everybody to use. Stealing yourself of the necessities will relieve you of a good dental exam.
