Define eczema? Ezcema is a skin disease that’s most often characterized by itchy and inflammed skin. The irritated skin is often dry, flaky, swollen, and often may be oozing with fluids. There are a lot of eczema forms that can be grouped into two major classifications. Eczematous dermatitis is caused by outside agents, such as the irritant effect of detergents on the skin.Endogenous or constitutional eczema doesn’t have any obvious cause.Endogenous eczema is divided into subgroups such as atopic, seborrhoeic, discoid , pompholyx, and also varicose eczema.
Atopic eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, tends to run in families. Most cases start at pregnancy and they are outgrown in about three to four years of age. Some would continue until adulthood as it flares up occasionally most particualrly if the patient is upset, angry or worried.
Pompholyx is that pattern in eczema that is often seen in the hands and feet. It usually develops in people in their twenties and thirties.Seborrhoeic eczema often appears as scaly plaques that are found on the skin and the scalp. With discoid eczema, the skin patches are shaped like that of a coin and they also come well defined.Varicose eczema is caused by poor circulation in the legs.Like discoid eczema, it usually occurs in older people.
