There are many different sorts of tinnitus. The most common kind of tinnitus generates a ringing sound within the ears. Pulsatile tinnitus is dissimilar as rather than a continued ringing noise, the noise is a rhythmical pulsating in ear that continues at the same speed as the pulse.
Hearing a rhythmical noise in your ears is not always pulsatile tinnitus as there is more than one type of rhythmical tinnitus. To determine whether or not it is pulsatile tinnitus it's required to simultaneously check the pulse. If the pulse and the noise in the ears occur at the same time then it is pulsatile tinnitus.
It is very rare for tinnitus sufferers to receive a diagnosis that identifies the reason for their tinnitus. However there is a bigger chance of learning the cause of pulsatile tinnitus than other types of tinnitus.
The pulsing in ear sounds is caused by changes in blood flow in the blood vessels in the area close to the ears. It is likelier to be due to a rise in blood flow than a lowering.
It is therefore more likely to experience pulsatile tinnitus following activity that increases blood flow such as exercise. Blood flow is also increased when pregnant, bad cases of anaemia or if the thyroid gland is overactive.
Pulsatile tinnitus can be caused by blood flow thru an artery in the middle ear called the stapedial artery. This is meant to close before birth but in some cases it can remain open and this leads to an abnormal flow of blood thru the middle ear that can cause the pulsing in ear sensation. Abnormal blood vessels in the head can develop as the result of benign growths in the neck and head.
Pulsatile tinnitus is not necessarily due to unusual changes in blood flow. Some of us have an increased state of awareness of changes taking place inside their body. They as a result might simply be more perceptive and this can cause the pulsing in ear sensation. It’s their elevated awareness that's the issue instead of the blood flow.
Hearing loss as an example can make folks more aware of internal body sounds as the external sounds are now not able to disguise the internal noises.
There are a few options that can be considered for treating pulsatile tinnitus dependent on whether a specific cause has been found. Treatments can range all the way from medication, surgery or having grommets inserted into the ear. If no cause is located then more generalized treatments can be given. There is a care program called Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) for instance. This is a kind of counselling that aims to train the subject to become less aware about the tinnitus.
